The importance of sketching

As an artist and maker, I never forget to have a notebook close by at all times. I have different books for different jobs and rooms in my workshop and home.

What's important in a notebook to me is the paper. Plain is best, good weight, off white and good for fountain pen or pencil. Why am I writing about notebooks? Because they help to develop a creative process, to make ideas turn from a thought to a sketch to a plan with lines, variations and hopefully an end result.

after writing in sketch books for over 35 years I have quiet a collection from age 12/13 years old with over 200 note books now. som have faded and become grey but they still carry ideas and act a memory of planning and thinking. I highly recommend the process and reading the book the ”Artists way” to inspire your path to journal writing and drawing.

Any time is sketch time, it about be ready and always having note book to hand. I've had ideas trawling around my head, this way and that that can be missed and never recovered. so for me it’s just part of the my daily routine. never forget your sketch book!
