Bespoke Wooden Furniture, Sculptures & Serving Boards

What drives me is the process of seeing inside the wood and its hidden shapes.

In the swirls and grain is evidence of the life of the tree. I collect wood around the seasons, trees washed up on beaches, roots that have invaded a wall, naturally felled timber. Wherever there is wood there is life and an opportunity for me to sculpt my work.

Once the wood is found and reclaimed the preparation begins, drying can take from one to five years and is a critical chapter in the creation process before I can begin to sculpt and to carve. Each tree is a unique entity, it has a personality and a set of growing traits, my job is to understand that history and work with it.

My work begs to be explored and touched by the viewer. Whether it is a sculpture, furniture or small abstract forms. Each piece is unique and reveals its history and memory through the natural shapes and grain. My mission is to fuse together a union of its life and its journey afterwards.

Each piece I create is a personal journey, never being sure of exactly what I am going to create or how it may change me or my working practice. Impermanence and the forces of nature drive my work, the most important aspect being the effect of water. It has played a constant role in my travels around the world and how I find the wood I work with.

I am always mindful of my place in nature, not external to it but an active participant within the environment.  Being aware of the interconnection of all things has always had a profound effect on my connection with trees and the energy held within them.

Serving Boards

MADE TO ORDER

Sapele wood serving platters. These were original commissioned for a UK restaurant in Liverpool. The serving boards are made with a cut out for adding your own bowl for oil, relish, etc. The carved insert allows the boards to be held without the bowl falling off the board! The wood finish is vegan-friendly mineral oil.

Design your own

You can design your own serving platters or boards to suit your needs, and to fit any dish or serving bowls that you use in your premises. Boards can also be branded to include your business name or logo as part of the design.

Oak Cube Sculptures

In 2017, I began a new work project, using French Oak to create a series of 30 cube sculptures.  The aim of the work was to re-evaluate my path as an artist; to dig a little deeper into what drives my work. After early discussions with land artist Richard Shilling – and possible collaboration on a piece of land art and wood sculpture – the path for the my personal work became clearer. And the journey for the project began to take shape.

Each oak cube weighed 25 kilos and measured 30-30-30 cm the number Three and the shape of a cube plays a continuous role in my work. As a Buddhist they are certain parts of my daily practice that I continuously process. This is mostly done in natural surroundings for me and in 2017 the location was Skipton moors, and beyond.  Never has the environment affected my work so dramatically than whilst living here.

Wood Sculptures

My sculptures reflect a strong relationship between “three keys” of my work: Wood, Environment & Time. Take a look at the gallery to see past projects and further notes on different sculptures that I’ve created.
